Toolbox Talk:

Handling Fuel Transfers Safely

June 27, 2025

Transferring fuel from one container to another may seem routine — but if done carelessly, it’s one of the most dangerous tasks on a jobsite.

Why It Matters:

Fuel vapors are highly flammable and can ignite with even a small static spark. A single mistake during transfer can result in a flash fire or explosion, especially in confined or poorly ventilated areas.

Key Points:

  • Always shut off engines and eliminate ignition sources before transferring fuel.
  • Use only approved containers with self-closing lids and flame arresters.
  • Ground and bond containers to prevent static discharge during transfer.
  • Never overfill — leave room for vapor expansion.
  • Perform all transfers in well-ventilated areas, preferably outdoors.

✅ Respect the fuel. Take time to transfer it safely and correctly.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we grounding containers when transferring fuel?
  • Do we have a designated, ventilated area for fueling tasks?
