Toolbox Talk:

Group LOTO – Everyone Must Apply Their Own Lock

June 27, 2025

In group lockout/tagout situations, no one should ever rely on someone else’s lock to protect them.

Why It Matters:

If energy is restored and a worker’s personal lock wasn’t in place, that person is at serious risk. OSHA mandates that each individual performing work must apply their own lock to ensure they’re not exposed to unexpected energy.

Key Points:

  • Every worker on the job must use their own lock—no exceptions.
  • Never share locks or rely on a supervisor’s lock for protection.
  • Double-check the group lockbox before starting work: is your lock on it?
  • No one can remove another person’s lock unless under strict, documented procedures.
  • Before leaving, workers must remove their own locks and sign out with the group LOTO coordinator.

✅ Your lock is your life. Use it every time.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we all placed our own locks on the lockbox?
  • What’s the process if someone forgets to remove their lock?
