Group Lockout Coordination

Toolbox Talk:

Group Lockout/Tagout for Multi-Worker Electrical Jobs

June 27, 2025

When multiple workers or trades are working on the same energized system, a group Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedure is required to ensure no one is left unprotected.

Why It Matters:

If just one person has the authority to remove a lock on shared equipment, others may be exposed to hazardous energy without warning. OSHA requires each individual to be personally protected when working on de-energized electrical systems (1910.333 & 1926.417). Group LOTO ensures every worker stays safe until all work is complete.

Key Points:

  • Use a group lockbox system or multi-lock hasp at the disconnect point.
  • The lead authorized employee applies the primary lock and places the keys in a secure lockbox.
  • Each crew member applies their personal lock to the group lockbox. The equipment cannot be energized until every individual has removed their lock.
  • Clearly identify the lead responsible for overseeing LOTO and coordinating with all parties.
  • Review the LOTO procedure as a team before starting any work.

✅ One system, multiple locks — full protection for every worker.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using a group lockbox or hasp for shared electrical work?
  • Does everyone understand when and how to apply their own lock?
  • Who is the lead person coordinating this group LOTO?
