Toolbox Talk:

Flash Flood Response on the Jobsite

June 27, 2025

Construction sites with trenches, low areas, or nearby water sources are vulnerable to flash flooding — especially in Texas and other flood-prone regions.

Why It Matters:

Flash floods can occur with little to no warning, sweeping away equipment, vehicles, and even workers in seconds. Fast reaction and pre-planning save lives.

Key Points:

  • Identify low-lying areas and mark them as “no-go” zones during heavy rain.
  • Create a flood action plan that includes evacuation routes and high ground assembly points.
  • Never enter flooded trenches or pits — water pressure can collapse walls or hide hazards.
  • Shut off electrical systems and generators that could be submerged.
  • Keep emergency kits and radios accessible in case of rapid evacuation.

✅ When water rises, get to high ground and stay alert.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know the flood-prone areas on this site?
  • What’s our plan if water begins rising fast?
