Toolbox Talk:

Final System Checks Before Re-Energizing

June 27, 2025

Before flipping the switch, confirm that every system component is safe and ready for operation.

Why It Matters:

Even after lockout/tagout devices are removed, residual hazards may remain. Failing to complete thorough final checks can result in unexpected motion, electrical shock, or mechanical failure. OSHA requires full system verification before re-energizing.

Key Points:

  • Perform a complete visual inspection of the equipment — look for loose wires, unsecured panels, or missing parts.
  • Check that all safety covers, guards, and interlocks are in place and functional.
  • Verify that control settings (e.g., manual/auto modes) are appropriate before startup.
  • If applicable, inspect fluid levels, pressure gauges, or warning lights to confirm normal conditions.
  • Use testing tools (e.g., voltmeters or test starts) to ensure the system responds correctly.
  • Document the results of your checks if required by procedure or permit.

✅ If you wouldn’t bet your life on it being safe — don’t start it.

Ask the Crew:

  • What final checks are required on this system?
  • Have we confirmed all guards and panels are secure?
