Toolbox Talk:

Fall Rescue Plans

June 22, 2025

Wearing a harness is step one. Having a plan for what happens after a fall is just as critical.

Why It Matters:

Even if someone is caught by their harness, they can still suffer suspension trauma — loss of circulation, unconsciousness, or worse — within minutes. A rescue plan saves time and saves lives.

Key Points:

  • Every job at height needs a written, site-specific rescue plan reviewed with the crew.
  • Don’t rely on 911 alone — emergency services may not reach the worker in time.
  • Use rescue kits. Know where they are, who’s trained, and how to use them.
  • Maintain clear communication — radios or signal plans are vital for coordination.

You saved the fall — now save the worker. Have a plan.

Ask the Crew:

  • Where is our rescue kit located?
  • Who here is trained in rescue procedures?
  • How fast can we realistically reach someone hanging in a harness?
