Three-Point Contact and Climbing

Toolbox Talk:

Face the Ladder When Climbing Up or Down

June 25, 2025

Climbing a ladder the wrong way increases your chance of slipping or losing your grip.

Why It Matters:

Many ladder injuries happen not at the top, but while going up or coming down — especially when workers rush or carry tools unsafely. Facing the ladder keeps your body balanced and your eyes on each step, reducing fall risk.

Key Points:

  • Always face the ladder when climbing or descending.
  • Use both hands and maintain three points of contact at all times.
  • Don’t carry tools or materials in your hands — use a tool belt or hoist them up.
  • Step carefully and deliberately. Avoid skipping rungs or rushing.

✅ Face the ladder, not the floor.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we maintaining proper climbing technique?
  • Do we need to review tool transport options to keep hands free?
