Toolbox Talk:

Electrical Safety in Wet Conditions

June 27, 2025

Rain and moisture introduce serious electrical hazards — even from tools and equipment we use daily.

Why It Matters:

Water is a powerful conductor. When it gets into cords, outlets, or power tools, the risk of shock, arc flash, or even electrocution increases dramatically. These incidents often happen fast — with little to no warning.

Key Points:

  • Never use corded electrical tools in the rain unless they’re rated for outdoor/wet use and plugged into a GFCI.
  • Inspect cords, plugs, and tools for damage before use — especially after storms or heavy rain.
  • Cover extension cords and outlets with weatherproof boxes or barriers when used outdoors.
  • Shut down and unplug equipment during lightning or electrical storms.
  • Keep dry hands, gloves, and tools when working around energized equipment — moisture compromises insulation.

✅ Rain and electricity don’t mix. If it’s wet, protect it or stop.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all cords and tools rated for outdoor use?
  • Do we have GFCI protection on temporary power in wet areas?
