Don’t Overreach — Move the Ladder

June 25, 2025

One of the most common causes of ladder falls is workers leaning too far to one side instead of repositioning the ladder.

Why It Matters:

Overreaching shifts your center of gravity and can cause the ladder to tip. A fall from even a few feet can result in broken bones, head injuries, or worse. It only takes an extra minute to move the ladder, but it could save your life.

Key Points:

  • Keep your belt buckle between the ladder side rails — if it goes beyond, you’re overreaching.
  • Use the right ladder height so you don’t feel tempted to stretch or stand on the top rungs.
  • If the task requires lateral movement, get down and reposition the ladder properly.
  • Never “walk” or “hop” the ladder while on it.

✅ Don’t lean — reposition clean.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have the right ladder for this task’s height?
  • Are we taking the time to reposition instead of reaching?
