Toolbox Talk:

Don’t Modify or Skip Eye Protection

June 25, 2025

Your safety gear is only effective when it’s worn as intended. Cutting corners on eye protection — whether by removing side shields, wearing it on your head, or choosing tinted lenses indoors — can leave you vulnerable.

Why It Matters:

Modified or improperly worn eye protection offers little to no defense against flying debris, dust, sparks, or chemical exposure. Inconsistent use is one of the top reasons workers still suffer preventable eye injuries.

Key Points:

  • Never remove side shields from safety glasses. They protect against debris entering from the sides.
  • Use tinted lenses only in bright sunlight — they reduce visibility indoors and in low-light environments.
  • Wearing glasses on your hat doesn’t count — they need to be on your face and fitted properly.
  • Face shields are not a replacement for safety glasses — they’re an extra layer when needed.
  • Always check for scratches or damage and replace compromised eye protection immediately.

PPE that’s modified, worn incorrectly, or not worn at all is as good as no protection.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we wearing the right eye protection for today’s tasks?
  • Is anyone modifying or misusing their PPE?
