Keeping Walkways Clear

Toolbox Talk:

Don’t Let Temporary Work Create Permanent Hazards

June 27, 2025

Temporary work setups — like welding areas, cutting stations, or tool laydown zones — often spill into walkways if not carefully managed.

Why It Matters:

A hose stretched across a path or a pile of tools in a walkway may seem harmless, but they can trip someone moving quickly or carrying materials. Falls on level surfaces are just as dangerous as falls from height, especially when workers aren’t expecting a hazard.

Key Points:

  • Identify any walkways being affected by temporary setups.
  • Use cord ramps or overhead routing for cables and hoses when possible.
  • Place high-visibility warning cones or signage near temporary obstructions.
  • Communicate any changes to foot traffic patterns during daily huddles.

✅ Temporary work doesn’t excuse permanent risk. Stay alert and stay tidy.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we creating new walkway hazards today?
  • Have we clearly marked or routed around any unavoidable obstructions?
