Toolbox Talk:

Don’t Let Nails Send You to the Clinic

June 27, 2025

Exposed nails and fasteners left sticking out of wood or debris can easily pierce through gloves, boots, or skin. These injuries might seem minor but can lead to serious infections or even lost time if not handled properly.

Why It Matters:

Nail punctures are common—and preventable. One rusty nail can send someone for a tetanus shot or worse. Taking a few extra seconds to remove or flatten hazards protects everyone on site.

Key Points:

  • Always remove or bend over protruding nails before discarding materials.
  • Use pry bars or hammers, not your hands, to handle sharp wood.
  • Designate scrap bins and never pile up sharp debris.
  • Inspect pallets, formwork, or reused lumber before carrying or using them.
  • Keep first aid kits stocked with wound-cleaning supplies.

✅ A nail out of the way keeps the injury away.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we safely disposing of sharp wood and metal?
  • What’s our process for dealing with exposed nails?
