Toolbox Talk:

Confined Spaces Are Not Break Areas or Shortcuts

June 26, 2025

Confined spaces are controlled for a reason — they’re not places to rest, explore, or pass through for convenience.

Why It Matters:

Entering a permit-required confined space without authorization can expose workers to deadly hazards like toxic gases, engulfment, or oxygen deficiency. Even a few seconds inside the wrong atmosphere can be fatal. Unauthorized entry also violates OSHA regulations and can trigger serious consequences for the site.

Key Points:

  • Only trained and authorized personnel may enter confined spaces
  • Confined spaces must be clearly posted and secured against casual entry
  • Never enter a confined space to retrieve tools, clean up, or “just take a look” without following entry procedures
  • Foremen must ensure confined space boundaries are respected at all times

✅ If your name isn’t on the permit — you don’t go in.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we seen anyone enter confined spaces without permission?
  • Are signs, barriers, and controls in place to prevent unauthorized access?
