Harness Inspection and Maintenance

Toolbox Talk:

Cleaning and Decontaminating Your Harness

June 22, 2025

Dirt, oil, sweat, and chemicals break down your harness over time.

If you don’t clean it properly, it won’t last — or protect you when it matters most.

Why It Matters

Contaminants weaken the fibers and stitching in your harness, reducing its strength and life span.

Regular cleaning not only makes your gear last longer, but also keeps it comfortable, odor-free, and safe to wear.

No one wants to put on gear that smells like last week’s shift.

Key Points

  • Clean your harness using mild soap and warm water
  • Never use bleach, solvent-based cleaners, or harsh chemicals
  • Use a soft brush or cloth — do not scrub aggressively
  • Air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area
  • Never use a dryer, space heater, or place it in direct sunlight
  • After cleaning, always reinspect your harness before storing or using it again

✅ Clean gear lasts longer and protects better.

Do’s & Don’ts of Harness Cleaning

✅ DO:

  • Wipe off sweat and grime after each use
  • Clean more often in dirty or oily environments
  • Hang to dry in a clean, shaded area
  • Inspect for damage after cleaning

🚫 DON’T:

  • Toss your harness into a washing machine
  • Use bleach, alcohol, or solvent sprays
  • Store it wet, or let it dry in the sun
  • Skip inspection just because it “looks clean”

Ask the Crew

  • When was the last time you cleaned your harness?
  • Are we using the right cleaning materials and methods?
  • Do you know where to hang it up safely to dry after washing?
