Crane Setup and Stability

Toolbox Talk:

Choose a Stable Setup Surface

June 22, 2025

Crane stability starts with choosing the right surface.

Why It Matters:

Uneven or soft ground can lead to crane tip-overs. Stability failures are preventable with proper planning.

Key Points:

  • Set up on firm, level ground.
  • Use crane mats or outrigger pads when needed.
  • Inspect for underground voids, utilities, or backfilled areas.
  • Reassess surface conditions after rain or equipment movement.

Stable base = safe lift.

Ask the Crew:

  • Is our setup area level and compacted?
  • Are we using proper support under outriggers?
  • Has the surface changed since we last checked?
