Crane Setup and Stability

Toolbox Talk:

Check for Overhead Hazards

June 22, 2025

Never position or set up a crane under power lines or obstructions.

Why It Matters:

Crane contact with overhead power lines is one of the leading causes of crane-related fatalities. Overhead obstructions can also restrict safe boom movement or cause load snags.

Key Points:

  • Maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from power lines — more for lines over 50kV.
  • Identify and avoid all overhead obstacles: power lines, signage, building overhangs, tree limbs, and structural beams.
  • Use a dedicated spotter when operating near potential overhead hazards or when visibility is limited.
  • Include overhead clearance in your pre-lift plan and job hazard analysis (JHA).

Look up before setting up. Plan your lift path.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we verified our clearances from power lines and obstructions?
  • Is there a designated spotter watching overhead conditions?
