Never position or set up a crane under power lines or obstructions.
Why It Matters:
Crane contact with overhead power lines is one of the leading causes of crane-related fatalities. Overhead obstructions can also restrict safe boom movement or cause load snags.
Key Points:
- Maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from power lines — more for lines over 50kV.
- Identify and avoid all overhead obstacles: power lines, signage, building overhangs, tree limbs, and structural beams.
- Use a dedicated spotter when operating near potential overhead hazards or when visibility is limited.
- Include overhead clearance in your pre-lift plan and job hazard analysis (JHA).
✅ Look up before setting up. Plan your lift path.
Ask the Crew:
- Have we verified our clearances from power lines and obstructions?
- Is there a designated spotter watching overhead conditions?
