Rigging Hardware Inspection

Toolbox Talk:

Bent, Cracked, or Stretched? Retire It.

June 22, 2025

Damaged rigging hardware must be removed from service immediately.

Why It Matters: A single compromised shackle, hook, or link can lead to dropped loads, equipment damage, or serious injuries. Visual cues are your first warning signs — don’t ignore them.

Key Points:

  • Bent shackles, hooks, or links indicate overloading and loss of integrity.
  • Cracks or gouges are signs of metal fatigue and structural weakness.
  • Stretched components mean the metal has deformed and is no longer rated.
  • Never “fix” rigging gear with welds, heat, or unauthorized repairs — retire it.

If it’s bent, cracked, or stretched — tag it and replace it.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we checked all rigging gear for deformation?
  • Do we have a clear process for removing damaged hardware from use?
