Overhead Power Line Clearance

Toolbox Talk:

Assign a Dedicated Spotter for Lifts Near Lines

June 22, 2025

When working near overhead power lines, a trained spotter must guide all crane or equipment movement.

Why It Matters:

Operators can’t always see overhead hazards. A focused spotter helps prevent deadly contact by maintaining constant awareness and communication.

Key Points:

  • Assign a single, dedicated spotter — no multitasking.
  • Spotter must have a clear, uninterrupted view of both the crane and power lines.
  • Use agreed-upon hand signals or radios for communication.
  • Stop all activity immediately if contact with the load, boom, or line of sight is lost.

✅ Eyes on the hazard = safer lift.

Ask the Crew:

  • Who’s our spotter today?
  • Do they have an unobstructed line-of-sight to the hazard?
