Atmospheric Testing and Ventilation

Toolbox Talk:

Always Test Before Entry

June 26, 2025

Before anyone enters a confined space, you must test the air — even if it “smells fine” or was recently entered. Invisible hazards like low oxygen, toxic gases, or flammable vapors can build up fast and kill without warning.

Why It Matters:

Oxygen-deficient or toxic environments are silent killers. One breath can knock a worker unconscious or worse. OSHA requires atmospheric testing before entry and continuously if conditions may change.

Key Points:

  • Test for oxygen, flammables, and toxic gases — in that order.
  • Use calibrated gas monitors with recent bump tests.
  • Test at top, middle, and bottom of the space — gases settle at different levels.
  • Never rely on your senses. Use instruments.
  • Record and verify readings before entry and during occupancy.

✅ No reading = no entry.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we testing every confined space before entry?
  • Who’s responsible for checking and documenting the air monitor readings?
