Hearing protection only works if it’s kept clean, dry, and ready for use — how you store it matters.
Why It Matters:
Improperly stored or maintained hearing protection can degrade faster, lose effectiveness, or become unsanitary. Dirty or damaged earplugs and earmuffs are less likely to be worn — or worse, worn ineffectively.
Key Points:
- Foam earplugs should be stored in a clean, dry container between uses (if reusable), and never loose in your pocket or toolbelt where they can collect dirt or become misshapen.
- Earmuffs should be hung in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, which can warp plastic or break down seals.
- Clean reusable earplugs and earmuffs regularly with mild soap and water — never solvents or alcohol which can degrade the material.
- Always dry hearing protection thoroughly before storing it to avoid mold or mildew.
- Keep PPE away from sharp objects or heavy items that could crush or puncture it.
- If you’re issued a personal storage case, use it — shared containers or pockets increase contamination risks.
- Regularly inspect your storage habits. Is your gear ready to go each day?
✅ Store smart to protect your gear — and your hearing.
Ask the Crew:
- Are we storing hearing protection properly at the end of each shift?
- Do we have clean, dry containers or cases available?
- When was the last time we cleaned or inspected our gear?
