Hearing protection only works when it’s clean, intact, and used properly — yet it’s often the most overlooked PPE on the job.
Why It Matters:
Damaged or dirty hearing protection reduces noise-blocking effectiveness, leaving your ears vulnerable to permanent damage. Poor hygiene can also lead to ear infections, especially with reusable earplugs.
Key Points:
- Inspect earplugs and earmuffs before every use. Look for cracks, hardened foam, broken bands, or missing cushions.
- Disposable foam earplugs should be thrown out after one use.
- Reusable plugs must be cleaned regularly with warm water and mild soap, then dried thoroughly.
- Earmuffs need clean, intact ear cushions and adjustable bands. Replace cushions if they’re cracked, stiff, or no longer seal.
- Store all hearing protection in a clean, dry container — not in your pocket, on a dusty surface, or exposed to sun or solvents.
- If hearing protection falls on a dirty floor or into water, clean or replace it immediately.
- Report broken or missing PPE to your foreman so replacements can be provided.
✅ Clean, functional hearing protection helps prevent noise-induced hearing loss and infection.
Ask the Crew:
- Have we inspected our hearing protection today?
- Does anyone need a fresh pair of plugs or new earmuff cushions?
- Where are we storing our PPE between uses?
