Use of Hearing Protection

Toolbox Talk:

Choose the Right Hearing Protection for the Job

June 27, 2025

Not all hearing protection is created equal. Choosing the right type — and using it properly — makes the difference between effective protection and false security.

Why It Matters:

Workplace noise above 85 dB can cause permanent hearing damage over time. Many tools and tasks — grinders, impact hammers, and compressors — exceed that limit. The right ear protection helps prevent hearing loss, which is irreversible but 100% preventable.

Key Points:

  • Earplugs are good for moderate noise and tight spaces. Roll and insert them properly so they expand and seal the ear canal.
  • Earmuffs are better for intermittent noise or when frequent removal is needed. They must seal completely over both ears.
  • Dual protection (earplugs + earmuffs) is recommended for extreme noise environments, like jackhammering in confined areas or demolition work.
  • Match the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) to the noise level of the task. A higher NRR = more protection.
  • Dirty or damaged hearing protection doesn’t work. Replace it when it’s worn out or soiled.
  • Don’t modify ear protection — like cutting plugs or wearing earmuffs over hard hats improperly. It reduces effectiveness.
  • Hearing protection is required by OSHA when noise averages above 85 dB over an 8-hour shift — and strongly recommended anytime noise makes it hard to hear someone 3 feet away.

✅ Proper hearing protection is a small habit that prevents a lifelong injury.

Ask the Crew:

  • What kind of hearing protection are we using today?
  • Is it rated high enough for the task?
  • Does anyone need help fitting their plugs or adjusting their earmuffs?
